Four decades of work with men from all walks of life.
Mentor Psychology combines long clinical experience with contemporary, evidence-informed psychological practice. The approach is practical, collaborative, solution-focused and trauma-informed.
Broad clinical experience
Adam is experienced across more than 40 therapeutic approaches, which provides a broad clinical toolkit. Methods are selected according to the person's needs. Adam has also worked in a broad range of settings including prisons, remote communities, AOD rehabilitation facilities, personality disorder programs, family services and private practice.
Men's work to suit men
Adam has been participating in, facilitating, designing and leading men's group work for 40 years as well, and is passionate about giving men the knowledge, skills and opportunity to heal and thrive in life. Mentor psychology emerges from that experience and passion, as a dedicated space for men to get the help that is appropriate to their unique lives. Mentor offers individual counselling, individual addiction programs, online self-paced learning and group self-development programs designed to make this available to as many men as possible.
Philosophy
"Several decades ago one of my mentors in this work told me that when I meet a new man, most of the time you only need ask one question - Is he too hard or too soft?. This has proven to be the most useful advice I have ever received in 40 years of therapeutic work. A man who lacks the ability to be appropriately vulnerable will suffer an empty and meaningless life, but a man who lacks the ability to be appropriately powerful, will wander through life without direction and purpose, and is very unlikely to achieve his potential and the life he desires. Success, though unique to each man, requires a balance of power and love, the ability to provide for and protect himself and those he chooses to care for, and the ability to care for those he chooses to protect and provide for. In my view this is both the challenge and the joy of masculinity, the ability to use masculine power to serve something greater than ourselves".
